Living Well with HIV and AIDS

This class was designed to help people living with HIV and their loved ones manage the day-to-day physical, emotional and social problems caused by having HIV, and to assist participants in more effectively working with their medical care providers to become as strong and healthy as possible while living with this chronic condition.

Subjects covered include:

    • How to best integrate medications into daily life so they can be taken consistently and side effects minimized or better managed.
    • Techniques to deal with problems such as fatigue, pain, isolation, stigma and discrimination
    • Appropriate exercise for maintaining and improving strength, flexibility, and endurance
    • Communicating effectively with family, friends, and health professionals, and handling disclosure issues
    • Healthy eating
    • Evaluating symptoms
    • Advanced directives
    • How to evaluate new or alternative treatments
    • Problem solving, Goal planning and Stress management

The seven-week workshop is held once a week for 2 1/2 hours each. The workshop is facilitated by a Peer Trainer and a Health Educator. Each participant in the workshop receives a copy of the companion book, Living Well With HIV and AIDS and an audio relaxation tape, Time for Healing.
